On Wednesday night, the historical birthplace of the free speech movement became a war zone of violence, anarchy and mayhem. As you’ve undoubtedly heard by now, hundreds of liberal students, professors and outside agitators rioted across the University of California Berkeley campus throughout the evening — setting random things on fire, hurling Molotov cocktails and throwing rocks, bricks and fireworks at police officers. Just looking at the astronomical level of violence, one would think someone had enforced a school-wide dress code policy or taken away all their beer and pizza. But, no. Alas, it wasn’t anything like that. No, these folks were rampaging and rioting because British conservative firebrand, journalist and author Milo Yiannopoulos — the openly gay senior editor for Breitbart News — was scheduled to speak there and, well, they weren’t about to have any of that.
So, the Left did the only thing they really know how to do. They threw a temper tantrum and called it a “protest.” Unfortunately, these protests always seem to involve illegal actions like theft, assault and destruction of property, but hey, why split hairs, right? Buildings were burned, trees were incinerated (in an environmentally-friendly way, I imagine), a Starbucks was destroyed and innocent bystanders were literally beaten in the streets all because a handful of immoral degenerates were too terrified to allow an opposing point of view to set foot on their campus. Ironically, Milo had planned on delivering a speech defending free speech, but instead he got everything he could have hoped for: a violent riot fueled by angry Leftists hellbent on shutting him down, thereby proving every point he was going to make. And it all culminated in one gigantic, disgusting display of just how corrupt and fascist campus liberals can be. I’m guessing his book sales went through the roof. Not to mention that in keeping him from delivering his spiel to a small group of people in an auditorium, they inadvertently gave him a national platform for the next several weeks. (He’s on Fox News’ Tucker Carlson Tonight as I type this sentence.)
Anyway, I’m not going to spend much time harping on Milo himself. I’m not a fan and honestly we don’t agree on much. But, like him or hate him, he has every right under the First Amendment and the Constitution to speak on that campus. Besides, in the end, this isn’t really about Milo. This is about an entire generation of millennials and grown adults who automatically resort to unhinged violence when they don’t get their way or when they feel threatened by a viewpoint that differs from their own. That’s the real problem here: absolute depravity and nihilism.
nihilism: [noun] - “1.) a viewpoint that traditional values and beliefs are unfounded and that existence is senseless and useless. 2.) a doctrine that denies any objective ground of truth and especially of moral truths. 3.) a doctrine or belief that conditions in the social organization are so bad as to make destruction desirable for its own sake independent of any constructive program or possibility."
See, these deranged maniacs weren’t really “protesting” Milo. If they had truly wanted to protest this guy, they would’ve done it by sitting on their butts in their dorm rooms or at their houses. They would have done it by refusing to attend his speech. They would’ve done it by not purchasing his new book. They would have ignored him completely. Instead, they gave him the best publicity he could have possibly asked for.
Why? Why did they literally fulfill every absurd stereotype about Leftism and prove every point that Milo would have undoubtedly made in the speech that he never got the chance to deliver? Because they’re a bunch of savage, destructive, mindless, aimless, immature, depraved thugs who just felt like settings things on fire and engaging in senseless violence. That’s really all there is to it. It’s nihilism at its finest and, sadly, Leftism has churned out an entire generation of these people because it’s an ideology totally and utterly devoid of morality and truth. At its roots, Leftism is dark, angry, hateful, eternally confused and extremely self-contradictory. Wednesday night was just another reminder of this. Just like Ferguson. Just like Baltimore. Just like any other example of pointless, violent rioting.
This wasn’t a protest. And it wasn’t a bunch of college students “expressing their anger.” Angry people don’t run around like barbarians, setting random things on fire and destroying private property. That’s the behavior of psychotic criminals.
And it should be treated as such.
