I’m starting to notice a trend among progressive liberals. I’ll be the first to admit I’m not the most observant guy in the world. Just ask my family. I never pay attention to landmarks when driving to an unfamiliar location. I rarely notice speed bumps. And I get lost in retail stores all the time. Seriously, it’s a miracle that I can function in society at all. But, even a dopey, directionally-challenged, right-wing conservative buffoon like me can occasionally pick up on controversial political and cultural trends, particularly when those trends are plastered all over the national news headlines, TV and radio networks and virtually every social media site on the Internet.
A few days ago, I noticed the hashtag #StopGunViolence trending on Twitter. Of course, this just happened to coincide with President Obama’s ridiculous comments on gun control last week after Chris Harper-Mercer strolled into an Oregon community college and slaughtered nine people. Within hours of the attack, Obama plopped down in front of the camera to spout his pathetically predictable rhetoric about “gun control” and “mental health” issues — all before the bodies were even bagged and removed from the crime scene, before the families could even bury their loved ones and before a full investigation could be conducted. You don’t have to be Sherlock Holmes to notice the classic liberal knee-jerk reaction every time there’s a tragedy like this one: just blame the guns. No mention of evil, sin, the disintegration of the nuclear family, fatherless children, godlessness or the complete breakdown of morality. Just blame the inanimate object, not the sinful heart and depraved nature of the shooter.
Typical liberals. Always looking for answers and solutions in the wrong places.
Anyway, I think it’s safe to say that progressives really don’t have a clue when it comes to these sorts of tragedies. For Obama and his sycophants in the liberal media, this is just another opportunity to push for tyrannical gun control legislation and ultra-leftist policies that will essentially put the Second Amendment in a paper shredder. In his speech, Obama did more than just suggest gun control, he hinted at gun confiscation, asking that Americans consider the policies that have been implemented in places like Australia and Great Britain:
We know that other countries, in response to one mass shooting, have been able to craft laws that almost eliminate mass shootings. Friends of ours, allies of ours — Great Britain, Australia, countries like ours. So we know there are ways to prevent it.”
In other words: ‘Yadda, yadda, yadda, I want your guns, blah, blah, blah, screw the Constitution.’
That’s a rough paraphrase, but you get the point.
What I’d love to hear from our president is how exactly he would go about confiscating the over 300 million firearms that exist in the United States. I mean seriously, wouldn’t he need an army to do that? And how about all those law-abiding citizens who would refuse to give up their guns? Or all of the current and former military folks with legal carry permits? Something tells me that sort of thing just wouldn’t go over too well. And that’s why it’ll never happen. It would be far too expensive and impractical, not to mention counterproductive and extremely unconstitutional. It might look like a good theory on paper, but in practice it’s just absurd and the results would be wildly unpredictable. I guess that’s why he’s planning on using executive action. What a shock.
I think there’s more to this though than debating statistics, numbers and the constitutionality of various gun control policies. Truth be told, liberals are ignoring the real issues at the heart of tragedies like these and are more content to blame guns and mental illnesses than evil and societal ills. It’s the same old schtick. We’ve seen it play out time and time again. Some deranged, wicked human being goes on a killing spree and we’re told it all could have been prevented if there had been a cute little ‘Gun Free Zone’ sign somewhere in the area. You know, because nothing deters an evil person hellbent on slaughtering innocent lives better than a fancy logo printed on a piece of metal.
The problem with all of these ideas is that they don’t provide any answers to the real issues. Perhaps the most glaring is the total breakdown of the American nuclear family. You’ll never hear President Obama tell you that Dylann Roof, who strolled into a black church in Charleston, South Carolina and killed nine people, came from a broken home and grew up without a loving father and committed mother. You won’t hear Obama tell you that Adam Lanza, who murdered 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, had an absent father and virtually no parental guidance in his life. You won’t hear Obama tell you that 70 percent of youth currently in state-operated institutions came from fatherless homes — nine times the average. You won’t hear Obama tell you that 71 percent of high school dropouts have virtually no connection with their fathers.
The statistics go on and on and on and they are simply mind-boggling.
Let me be clear: I’m not saying that a stable home life will prevent every teenager from committing horrible or deadly acts of violence. Obviously, there will always be exceptions. What I am saying, however, is that children who have been raised in loving homes by parents who stay committed to marriage and teach their kids the value of faith, honesty, integrity, love and character, are far less likely to pick up an assault rifle and murder their classmates or coworkers. Kids who are regularly attending a solid church and spending time with other spiritually-grounded youth are less likely to run off and rob the local convenience store on the street corner or shoot a police officer in the face. Kids who stay committed to their academic pursuits are less likely to do drugs. Boys who are taught to value and respect women are less likely to rape and assault them.
All of this is very much dependent on the parents. Mothers and fathers need to teach and encourage their children to pursue these values. To folks like me and you, this all probably just seems like common sense. But to the liberals, it’s pointless. It’s meaningless. It’s irrelevant. It’s too much to confront. Too much to deal with. Too much to address.
See, this is the problem with progressivism’s approach to so-called “gun violence.” They refuse to confront the spiritual, moral and ethical issues and instead focus on banning weapons and throwing folks into mental institutions or health clinics. By their logic, no guns equals no crime. No guns equals no murder. No guns equals no more senseless slaughtering of innocent lives.
This is the sort of thing that might cause me to one day have a total mental breakdown.
To all of you liberal idiots out there: Our kids don’t need unconstitutional gun control legislation. They need loving parents. They need committed parents. They need a mother and a father for life. No, this is not the answer to all of our problems. But, neither is wiping out sections of the Constitution.
Please, take a step back and look at the bigger picture before trying to radically transform the country. The answer might be more simple, and more obvious, than you think.
