Last Friday, a steaming-pile-of-crap-worthy news story hit the press, revealing once again how utterly delusional our culture has become. Honestly, when I hold this one up against the Bruce Jenner controversy, it’s really hard to think of two stories that better represent modern-progressive America. I confess I’m a little late to this particular soap opera — mostly because I’ve been out doing more important things this weekend. (Like watching dinosaurs eat people.) Needless to say, when I got wind of this one, I immediately wondered if it was all some sort of elaborate hoax drummed up by stupid leftwing media psychos. I almost went to Snopes to debunk the whole thing. Unfortunately, it’s legit. And frankly, that’s no surprise.
If you were fortunate enough to miss the story completely, here’s the gist: Rachel Dolezal, president of the Spokane, Washington chapter of the NAACP, has been outed by her parents as being white (a Caucasian of European descent) and has apparently “disguised" herself as African-American for years. (Think Michael Jackson, but in reverse.) Her parents went to the press and said that Rachel is their “birth daughter and we’re of European descent…we’re puzzled and it’s very sad." Apparently Rachel’s true heritage is a mix of German, Czech and Swedish. I guess she must have been fearful that her parents would eventually expose her true ethnicity, given that she cut all communication ties with mom and dad.
Naturally, the media is treating this epic saga as if it’s the most heroic and fascinating chronicle of events since the fall of the Roman Empire. Here’s a little more of the tale: The Spokesman-Review in Spokane recently asked Rachel whether she was actually black or white, to which she replied: “That question is not as easy as it seems. There’s lots of complexities…and I don’t know that everyone would understand that. We’re all from the African continent.”
Furthermore, Rachel also:
I could go on and on, but you get the picture.
In a country where we gleefully handed a courage award to a mentally-ill, 65-year-old transgendered grandfather, it’s really no surprise to see leftists applauding Dolezal for embracing her “true race.” Obviously she was just born with the wrong skin pigmentation and ancestral ethnicity. And since she “feels” like she’s black, then she must be black. How dare anyone tell her otherwise? After all, emotions outweigh science, logic, biology, genetical make-up and anatomy, right? To disagree with her feelings just makes you a racist bigot (or, I guess technically, a transracial bigot.) Just last month, we all watched as radically liberal progressives swooned like star-crossed lovers over Bruce Jenner’s sex change. Now, it will be the same ideological romance with Rachel Dolezal, as she has become the utter personification of every stereotype prized by progressive leftists: a victimized black woman trying to fight for diversity as a cultural heroine for human rights. It’s no wonder she was elevated to president of the NAACP, handed oversight responsibilities of the police commission and received worship and praise from almost every media outlet in the nation.
But now, it’s all crashing down around her and the finely-woven threads of her story are quickly unraveling. I have a hard time pitying this woman, as she really brought this on herself by living an outright lie. Call it karma, fate, destiny, ‘reaping what you sow,’ or whatever you like. But there’s no getting around the fact that this is one-hundred percent her own fault. I guess at some level, it’s just human nature to repeat actions that have rewarded us in the past. Dolezal found enough incentive to live her life as a black woman, so she did. It doesn’t excuse her actions, but it does reveal a subtle truth about our humanity.
It’s the shock-factor that really irks me. Everyone has been shocked. Everyone. From the news pundits to average, ordinary Americans, everyone is utterly shocked beyond belief that someone would not only do this, but was able to get away with it for so long. There’s a sort of sick obsession running through our culture — a demented obsession with people who try to become what they were never meant to be. Frankly, it’s more shocking that America is shocked by this. I mean, it was really only a matter of time before someone decided to say: “Hey, I don’t feel like being a white, blonde woman anymore. I’d like to be black now, so please shave off my blonde hair, give me some of those fancy fake hair follicles and tan my skin until I’m as black as Will Smith.”
The whole situation is terribly demented and bizarre. But not surprising. I don’t see why anyone is stunned or captivated by this.
The sad truth is that, whether we’ll admit it or not, our culture creates the Rachel Dolezal’s and Bruce Jenner’s of the world. Aside from the obvious psychological and spiritual sicknesses, this sort of behavior was really inevitable when you consider the social, racial and gender constructs that we’ve allowed to become warped and “changeable” over the last decade or so. Her actions, just like Bruce Jenner’s, are offensive to say the least — offensive to the very core of human nature — but they are actions that we’ve stamped with seals of approval. We’ve come to a place where changing genders and ethnicities is as simple as changing clothes. Leftist progressive culture has obliterated the very essence of human individuality and the notion of “self” — that you are who you are, no matter what.
Rachel Dolezal may be wearing her “blackness” like some sort of flashy outfit and she may very well be living under the delusional belief that she is genuinely black. But she’s not. She has and always will be a white woman.
Remember when President Obama made this remark about Bruce Jenner: “It takes courage to share your story.”
I guess in modern American society it really doesn’t matter if your story is total bullcrap. It only matters that you like who you are and, even if you’re a fraud, it’s ok as long as everyone else believes you.
And honestly, that’s really not surprising either.
