As most of you know, I’ve been rather vocal in previous posts about my disagreements with presidential frontrunner Donald Trump. I make no apologies for that. The man is a buffoon, an embarrassment to the Republican Party and a ridiculous circus act of unending foot-in-mouth moments. Let’s face it, he’s not a serious candidate, he’s a cartoon. And, apparently, he’s not even really a conservative. This was made blatantly clear a couple of days ago when he declared that America should temporarily ban Muslim citizens from reentering the country. Obviously, this is completely ridiculous, insane, unconstitutional and illegal. Oh, and illegal and unconstitutional. And, uh, really unconstitutional. And, in case it’s unclear, illegal.
To be clear: I’m not alone in this opinion. Ben Carson told CNN’s Jake Tapper that Trump’s plan is un-American and unconstitutional. Carly Fiorina echoed this opinion while making a stop in Des Moines, Iowa. Speaker Paul Ryan vehemently condemned the remarks saying that they don't even remotely reflect American values or true conservatism. And multiple law experts expressed their concerns about the constitutionalism of the plan. Twitter and Facebook were also ablaze with hundreds of users lambasting Trump for "hating Muslims" and "being a racist" and other things. Of course, he continues to surge in the polls, even after the controversial remarks.
Anyway, the media immediately pounced on the guy (as they always do), eager to ask how exactly Mr. Trump would go about keeping Muslim citizens out of America. As is usually the case with Trump, he offered no real specifics and basically vomited up a bunch of vague, empty rhetoric. For a full description of Trump’s plan, please keep reading.
Are you ready? Ok, here’s the official plan, which was outlined by The Donald during a Tuesday appearance on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.” President Trump would require all border agents to ask legal immigrant citizens this question — “Are you Muslim?” And if the person says, “Yes” they would not be allowed to reenter the country.
I mean, did you get that. No? Alright, here it is one more time. The official Donald Trump “No More Muslims” Plan:
Step 1: Border agent: “Are you a Muslim?”
Step 2: If the person answers “yes,” the border agent will say, “You cannot reenter America.”
This is the brilliant master plan to keep America safe from radical Islamic terrorism, folks. Of course, it’s a joke. I honestly don’t see how anyone can take this man seriously. But, alas, he continues to lead the presidential race. His supporters — let’s call them Trumplings — have been duped into believing that this is actually a real, plausible solution. I mean, who would really lie about being a Muslim? Surely a terrorist would tell the truth. Radical Islamic extremists are some of the most honest, principled and noble people in the world, right? Let’s face it: Trump is living on another planet if he believes this is practical methodology for combating jihadist terrorism. And Trumplings are just as delusional for following him.
Speaking of delusions, this so-called plan would have to apply to tourists and U.S. citizens who are traveling overseas on temporary trips and vacations. Can you imagine how well that would go over? Think about it: You’re a legal, law-abiding Muslim-American citizen returning from a nice little trip to London or Italy and suddenly, when Trump wins the presidency, you’re unable to return to your house. So, in essence, the Trump plan for you is: Sorry, but you’re screwed. Enjoy living overseas. The fact that this plan has so much support from Trumplings is just further evidence that only a small number of Americans actually believe in the constitution and in freedom. Most have abandoned both — thanks largely in part to Obama.
And therein lies the problem and the irony: We already have a president who ignores the Constitution on a regular basis. Barack Obama is the most anti-Constitution, anti-freedom, anti-American president in the history of the United States. He passes legislation without congressional approval. He changes laws after they’ve been passed through Congress. His administration used the IRS to target conservatives, Christians, pro-Israel Americans and various Republican organizations and donors. He amended Obamacare via executive order in an effort to allow doctors and hospitals to investigate which patients own guns — meaning that the government can track and monitor law-abiding gun owners simply because they received medical care. He and his administration knowingly lied to Congress and the American public about the attack on the Benghazi consulate — one that resulted the death of Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans — repeatedly blaming an anti-Islamic video even though he knew it was a well-planned terrorist attack. I could go on and on, but I think you get the point.
To be blunt: Donald Trump has revealed a very disturbing level of stupidity and ignorance in American voters — a level that I really didn’t think was even possible after Barack Obama won the presidency in 2008. I guess I was wrong. And sometimes I really hate being wrong.
Obviously, Trump has also revealed that folks are fed up with Obama’s refusal to confront and defeat radical Islamic terrorism. I get that. I really do. I’m frustrated too. But, being frustrated with Obama’s inaction isn’t an excuse or reason to trade one unconstitutional, dictatorial president for another just because the other guy has an “R” at the end of his name. Anyone who cares about religious liberty in this country should be denouncing Trump’s reckless plan and ridiculous comments. To be clear: As a Christian, I strongly disagree with the ideological tenets and precepts of Islam. That should go without saying. However, any president who wields the power to say which religions are and are not valid or allowed in America is a dangerous president.
Do not be fooled, America: A government that decides to shut down a mosque just because it’s a mosque is a government that can shut down a Baptist church just because it’s a Baptist church. A government that bans Muslims from the country is a government that can ban Christians, Jews, Catholics, Methodists, Presbyterians or any other religious group or denomination for any reason it deems justifiable. A government that kicks down the doors of a Muslim temple is a government that can kick down the doors of a Bible study. Is that really the sort of risk you want to take, Trumplings?
Clearly, Donald Trump is the best thing that’s happened to progressive liberalism in the last 50 years. He’s the very embodiment of every preposterous and ridiculous stereotype of modern American conservatives.
You want to analyze, investigate or scrutinize suspicious Muslim non-citizen immigrants? Fine. But, if you think Muslim-American citizens should be banned from the country just because they’re Muslim, then you hate the Constitution.
