Is it just me, or is the fabric of our society unraveling faster than Miley Cyrus’s career? I mean, seriously. It’s like our country can’t go one week without some sort of overdramatized controversy, Hollywood nightmare, political scandal or, in this instance, horrific act of terrorism. (Oh crap, I used the “T” word. I can hear the PC police sirens wailing in the distance.) Has humanity gone completely insane?
By now I’m sure you’ve heard all about Mr. Alton Alexander Nolen — a former employee of Vaughan Foods in Oklahoma who was, apparently, so upset about being fired, that on Thursday he decided to chop off the head of a co-worker and then stab another. Colleen Hufford, 54, who worked alongside Nolen at the Moore County-based food distribution center, was brutally beheaded and Traci Johnson, 43, suffered severe injuries after she was stabbed repeatedly by Nolen. Mark Vaughan, an off-duty sheriff’s deputy who, ironically, is the former owner of Vaughan Foods, stopped Nolen and was eventually forced to shoot him several times, according to local news and police reports. The suspect was taken to a nearby hospital and is expected to survive.
Normally, this sort gruesome crime would only make local news. It’s a murder. A morbid one. But a murder nonetheless.
But Mr. Nolen isn’t your average, run-of-the-mill disgruntled employee. Why? Well, because prior to slaughtering his co-worker, he converted to Islam and then tried to convert his fellow employees.
Ah. Now we have a story that merits national coverage. Right?
After all, radical Islamic ideology has been in the news for months — what with all the brouhaha over ISIS, Syria, al-Qaeda and now its influence on seemingly “average” Americans. Scary stuff. In fact, it’s downright terrifying that militant terrorists who are hellbent on the destruction of America and the merciless killing of infidels (that’s you and me, by the way) adhere to a religiously-warped ideology that is now alive and well in the U.S. If that doesn’t frighten you, you’re either terribly uninformed or braver than I am. (Which isn’t saying much. I’m still afraid of the dark.)
Local TV news station KFOR reported that, “the FBI is now looking into Nolen’s background after his former co-workers said he tried to convert them to Islam after recently converting himself. It is not known if the suspect’s beliefs played a role in the attack.”
Maybe they should really start by looking at his Facebook page here. It’s a tad incriminating.
Something tells me KFOR wants to avoid sparking a controversial dialogue about radical Islamic extremism. I suppose that’s understandable. Nolen did have a criminal record — including drug charges and assault and battery against a police officer. Maybe he’s just a violent individual in general. The world is full of people like that.
But it’s hard to ignore the elephant in the room here: Nolen’s conversion to Islam — a religion that our president has defended as a “religion of peace” that is no different than any other religion. What he failed to mention is that beheadings are typically the form of murder used by radical Islamic extremists.
Maybe it makes me a heartless and intolerant prick, but if one of my co-workers walked into work next week wielding a machete and decapitated a woman in the name of Islam, “religion of peace” wouldn’t be term I’d use to describe such an act. Sure, there are plenty of Muslims in the world who would never dream of murdering an innocent human being. Sure, there’s an ongoing investigation.
That being said, there are very few people these days who are willing to admit that “jihad” (meaning “struggle” or “resistance”) is an Islamic term that is being used by Muslim extremists to justify killing anyone who doesn’t convert to Islam. President Obama has repeatedly downplayed the threat that this belief poses to the United States, and to other countries around the world, and he consistently refuses to admit that these terrorists cling to beliefs that, irrefutably, have their roots in Islam.
This is the same president who, back in 2009, decided to refer to the Fort Hood massacre, in which Major Nidal Hasan fatally shot 13 people and wounded over 30, as “workplace violence.” Hasan even admitted in his statements and in his out-of-court comments that he was trying to protect Taliban leaders from U.S. soldiers deploying to Afghanistan.
I suspect that Obama is afraid. He’s afraid of making a correlation between terrorism and Islam. He’s afraid that if he says it, Americans will associate the two. Ironically, no one is asking him to do that. We are, however, asking him to understand the dangers of this radical ideology. We are asking him to do what is necessary to defend and protect our country.
Americans need to wake up and realize the obvious truth. Radical Islam is spreading. It is responsible for countless deaths in places like Egypt, Nigeria, Mali, Kenya, Yemen, Syria, Iraq, Pakistan and Somalia. And unless our president declares an all out war on radical Islamists, there will be no “peace.”
